How Youth Values and Baseball go Hand in Hand

Parents want their children to be the best young people they can be. Fortunately, being involved in baseball can help a child to achieve that lofty goal. That’s because baseball teaches many important values and life skills to young people, including teamwork, democracy, perseverance, and social skills.

Baseball and Teamwork
It’s pretty easy to see how baseball would teach young children how to work together, which is what teamwork is all about. Through playing baseball, young athletes will quickly see how members of a team depend on one another, and how, when one person doesn’t pull his weight, the whole team suffers. In this way, players will learn responsibility to their teammates and their team as a whole. They will also learn the value of encouraging their teammates to be their best, rather than putting down those who are struggling.

Democracy
As mentioned, young baseball players quickly come to see how their actions and choices affect their teammates and the team as a whole. These types of experiences will teach them to always think of others when they make decisions and to do what’s best for the group, rather than just for themselves.
Furthermore, as members of teams, they will learn how to cooperatively make decisions and how to be a part of an organization that is governed by its members.

Perseverance
In baseball, things are not always going to go the way the player wants them to. Players will undoubtedly struggle with one skill or another. That’s just how things go in the world of baseball. Players will be encouraged to keep trying, however, and not to give up until they get whatever they happen to be working on right. That right there- working until a goal is reached- is what perseverance is all about, and playing baseball is one of the easiest ways to earn this all-important skill.

Social Skills
Finally, baseball teaches kids how to be social and how to make and keep friends, even when they go through tough spots together. Children who play baseball or other team sports are constantly surrounded by others, and they have to learn how to work out their problems and how to persevere through a bad season or a bad game. Baseball and being part of a team can also make a child more confident, which in turn, can make him or her more social. In that way, baseball is great for teaching kids how to have healthy, active social lives.

As you can see, baseball is good for kids in a wide variety of ways. Getting your children involved in baseball and keeping them involved is one of the best things you can do as a parent.
