Young baseball players sometimes have serious problems with hitting
the ball and/or with hitting the ball correctly. To compensate, they may
consciously or even subconsciously make small changes that they think will fix
the problem. Unfortunately, though, these changes usually just tend to make the
hitting problem worse or to affect another part of the player’s swing in a
negative way.
Players need to learn from a young age how to hit properly
and how to be consistent in their hitting techniques. When you find that they
are struggling with either of these fundamentals, you’ll want to take the
player (or the whole team if needed) back to the beginning. Running some drills
can help, as can encouraging your player to buy an automatic hitting trainer.
If you’re a generous coach or parent, you could even buy one yourself and share
it with the team.
These automatic hitting trainers, such as the Insider Bat,
are muscle memory devices that are
designed in such a way that players
practically can’t hold them any other way. In fact, if they’re not holding the
trainer correctly, it is impossible for them to make contact with the ball!
Missing hit after hit is a pretty good way to drill into a player’s memory what
the proper hitting technique is.
Hitting trainers can also help with other skills and needs,
such as:
·
Proper hand positioning before, during, and
after ball contact
·
Avoiding wrist rolling
·
Proper grip
·
Staying inside the ball
·
Proper hip rotation
·
Tucking of the back elbow
Trainers can sometimes be a little bit of an investment, but
when one considers how useful they are, it’s easy to see that they’re worth the
price tag. Plus, coaches or parents can always buy used trainers or even split
the cost between a team.
